Three companies have claimed to lack funding to comply with minimum staffing requirements.
Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, and Bernie Sanders of Vermont were joined by Representatives Lloyd Doggett of Texas and Jan Schakowsky of Illinois in writing to National Healthcare Corp., the Ensign Group Inc., and Brookdale Senior Living, Inc., questioning why the companies claim a lack of funding for new staff while spending hundreds of millions on stock buybacks.
President Biden’s administration recently implemented a minimum staffing threshold for senior living facilities, hoping to address the issues that nursing homes face due to a lack of staff. However, representatives from the companies claim that the new requirements are “unrealistic” due to underfunding in the industry.
“These two competing claims do not add up,” the legislators wrote, noting that the industry “diverts hundreds of millions of dollars in cash away from nursing home staff and patient care, and into the pockets of company executives and shareholders.”
